"Grandchildren are the crown of the grey heads, and the glory of children is their parents"
- Proverbs 17:6
Greetings Friends,
I love the verse above because it paints a clear picture of the power of the covenant among three generations at once. The "crown" refers to the value of the grandparent to the generations, and the honor they bestow upon their children and grandchildren.
Thus we see both the authority and the power they carry in the family covenant to invest the value (wealth of the gospel) in their souls, and both bring honor to the family and call the young ones up to a place of honor in thought and deed.
This is a bit different than grandparents joking about how they get away with spoiling the grands when the parents aren't there. Look, we have over 20 grandchildren, and we love to give to them in various ways that bring them joy, but we work to draw a line when it comes to who is running this show.
Our role is to invest in them body, mind and soul. It usually requires initiating conversations, lessons, training in applying Scripture to life, supporting the type of character development their parents are engaging in, etc.
The crown grey heads carry means their words, actions, and for sure their prayers not only matter, but echo with efficacy in the heavens. Why? Because this is our Lord's created order, and He doesn't care for shallow relationships that are driven by how much fun I can create for my grandchildren. Should we be fun? Absolutely! Should we fear invading their lives? Absolutely not! My grandchildren listen to me with child like faith when I speak into their souls, and we work to make it a fun process.
Friends, many of you are grandparents, or will be soon, and we don't want to miss the eternal opportunity given us while we're still on the earth. So, may grace be yours to be covenant initiators, invaders, and depositors of value and honor.
Because, when you think about it, the future depends on it.
Happy Investing!
